Gunma

Located approximately 100 km north of Tokyo, Gunma prefecture is rimmed by mountains to the north and west. Two thirds of the prefecture is comprised of mountains, while the southeastern corner constitutes part of the Kanto Plain. Gunma features a vast array of scenic beauty, including mountains reaching over 2,000 m in height, highland moors such as Oze, beautiful lakes and ponds, river gorges such as the magnificent Agatsuma Gorge, and the clear waters of the Tone River.

Climate: Gunma has a typical inland climate. It is hot and humid in the summer, and features strong, dry winds, known as karakkaze, in winter.

Shikishima Park Caribbean Beach
1Shikishima Park (Maebashi City, Gunma Prefecture)
Shikishima Park exhibits many different plants and is particularly famous for its 2,000 rose bushes, featuring some 200 different varieties of roses, which bloom from late May to mid June. The park also features a tropical plant and cactus greenhouse.
2Caribbean Beach (Kiryu City, Gunma Prefecture)
This tropical-style attraction, built in the image of the Caribbean, features a number of indoor swimming pools, including a wave pool, and water slides.

Hakojima Fudosan Asamakakushi Hot Spring
3Hakojima Fudosan (Higashi agatsuma Town, Gunma Prefecture)
An historic Buddhist temple famous for the Hakojima spring gushing from the roots of a giant cedar. This feature has been designated as a national monument. Fireflies can be seen in the downstream areas from mid-June through July.
4Asamakakushi Hot Spring (Higashi agatsuma Town, Gunma Prefecture)
This is the collective name for the three hot springs located on the Yukawa River, the Hatonoyu, Nurukawa, and Yakushi hot springs. It is a perfect location for resting and recuperating while listening to the gentle murmuring of the river.

Lake Nozori Gunma Prefectural Observatory
5Lake Nozori (Kuni Town, Gunma Prefecture)
Lake Nozori is a man-made lake located in the Joshinetsu Kogen National Park. It is 1,514 m above sea level and has a circumference of around 12 km. The area also features brilliant highland flowers such as Japanese azaleas and nozorikisuge.
6Gunma Prefectural Observatory (Takayama Village, Gunma Prefecture)
This observatory is equipped with various telescopes including one of Japan's largest reflector telescopes with a diameter of 150 cm. The observatory is popular among a wide range of people, from children to astronomy enthusiasts alike.

Bokyo no Yu Sarugakyo Hot Spring
7Bokyo no Yu (Numata City, Gunma Prefecture)
Bokyo no Yu is a public hot spring bathhouse located within the Michi no Eki Shirasawa leisure complex. It offers a scenic view of Mt. Akagi, and wild mountain vegetables are available at the gift shop on the premises.
8Sarugakyo Hot Spring (Minakami Town, Gunma Prefecture)
This hot spring resort is located on the shore of Lake Akaya. Sarugakyo flourished as a postal station town with a checking station and during the Edo period, and a number of historic sites can therefore be found within. Visitors can also enjoy fishing and boating on the lake.
